Vacations in Cape Town's CBD and Accommodation for Your Holiday Print E-mail
The Cape Town CBD is a great central location to set up headquarters for your holiday. The city bowl, as it is known, rests at the base of Table Mountain and stretches up to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean.
The atmosphere in Mother City blends the formalities of the metropolitan business world in an around the high rise skyscrapers above, with the endearing laid back qualities of African eccentricities.

With trains, buses and taxis (metered and minibus taxis) operating throughout the city, it's easy to get around Cape Town. Within the city bowl itself, many places of interest are within walking distance of your Cape Town CBD accommodation.

Cape Town CBD Attractions

Long Street and Beyond

The designer stores and world class shops in the Cape Town CBD are matched by the side-walk level vendors, whose wares could include anything from local snacks such as samoosas (triangular curried pastries) to curios and other hand made souvenirs.

Keep your eyes open for speciality shops in the quaint side streets too. Many streets in Cape Town’s CBD are closed to vehicles and may operate as a promenade for pedestrians to access the shops and restaurants tucked away between the bustling streets.

Greenmarket Square

Although now an informal market place for African curios and other appealing nik naks, Greenmarket Square is an integral piece of Cape Town’s rich and colourful history. Throughout the 200+ years, that the square has been around, it has been used as a trading post for everything from food to slaves, and has often been the location for South African demonstrators during the Apartheid struggle.

The Company Gardens

The beautiful botanical gardens in the heart of Cape Town’s CBD, is a popular spot for relaxing and getting some fresh air. Originally used in the 1600s for growing supplies for passing ships of the Dutch East India Company, the Company Gardens, or ‘Kompanjietuin’ as it was then known, is usually relatively busy with people and families soaking up the garden atmosphere, while frantic squirrels run around in the trees overhead – the gardens are especially on warmer days.

There is plenty to see and do around the gardens. The National Art Gallery, The South African Museum, Jewish and Holocaust Museum, Planetarium and the Cape Town houses of Parliament are all situated adjacent to the gardens.

Victoria and Alfred Waterfront

Known as the V&A Waterfront, the commercial Cape Town harbour is a popular destination for locals and foreigners alike. The massive shopping mall is bursting with options and is comprised of hundreds of luxury shops, restaurants and entertainment activities (such as the mainstream cinema as well as the art circuit cinema).

The Two Oceans Aquarium is located within the V&A Waterfront, and provides an amazing look at marine life via extensive exhibitions and large tanks.

Robben Island

The infamous island with was the prison of former South African president, Nelson Mandela, is now a thriving tourist attraction. Boat trips to the island, which lies nestled in the crook of the beautiful Table Bay, are accessible through the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Although not regarded as within walking distance of Cape Town’s CBD, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are just a short drive from the centre of town – a trip well worth it. For a nominal entrance fee, visitors can enjoy the showcase of beautiful indigenous South African flora such as fynbos and the protea.
Kirstenbosch Gardens often hold exhibitions and events, as well as the popular series of weekly outdoor concerts during the pleasant summer months.
